Etymology
The word derives from مَسْرَح (masraḥ), "theatre" or "stage," a noun of place built on the root س-ر-ح, whose base sense is to let cattle loose to graze. The feminine ending ـِيَّة turns the place-noun into a name for a single work made for that place. So a مَسْرَحِيَّة is literally a "stage piece." The theatrical sense is modern, coined as Arabic built vocabulary for Western dramatic forms.
