Etymology
عِداد is a verbal noun built from the root ع-د-د, whose core sense is counting or numbering. It follows the fiʿāl pattern, the same shape found in كِتاب (writing) and حِساب (reckoning). In practice speakers use it almost only inside the fixed phrase في عِداد, "among the count of," to say that a person or thing belongs to a named group. The same root gives Arabic its ordinary word for a number, عَدَد, and the everyday word for a meter or counter, عَدّاد.
