Etymology
The word comes from the Arabic root f-q-r (ف ق ر), whose core sense is the backbone or a single vertebra. Classical lexicographers extended this to mean any discrete segment strung together with others, which is how it came to denote a paragraph in a text or a segment in a broadcast. The same root gives faqir, poor, from an old image of someone whose backbone has been broken by hardship. As a Semitic root, it has no Proto-Indo-European ancestor.
