Etymology

فَقْرِيّ comes from the Arabic root ف-ق-ر, whose oldest concrete sense involves the notches of the backbone. From this root came فقرة, meaning a single vertebra or, by extension, a segment or paragraph. Adding the nisba ending -ِيّ, which turns a noun into a descriptive adjective, produced فقري, 'vertebral' or 'belonging to the spine.' The same root also gave فقير, 'poor,' through an old metaphor of a person reduced to nothing but a bare, exposed backbone.
