Etymology
Qissīs comes from the Semitic root q-s-s, tied to the simpler form qass, an old Arabic word for a Christian priest already used before Islam. Most lexicographers trace it to Syriac qashishā, meaning elder, from a root meaning to grow old. That same shift, elder becoming priest, also happened with Greek presbyteros, the source of English presbyter.
