نَغْمَة comes from the native Semitic root ن غ م (n-gh-m), which covers musical and vocal sound. The base form نَغَم (nagham) names melody or tune as a mass concept, and the tāʾ marbūṭa ending in نَغْمَة turns that into one countable instance, a single tone or tune. The root also gave rise to تنغيم (intonation) and the verb نغّم (to intone or set to music).
