Etymology
The verb comes from the Arabic triliteral root ع-ه-د, a native Semitic root with no known Indo-European link. In early and Quranic usage it centers on covenant and binding trust between two parties, which is why the related noun عهد means pact, contract, or era marked by such a bond. From that core sense of a binding tie grew the two everyday meanings of the Form I verb: to entrust someone with a duty, and to know someone well enough to vouch for their character.
