Etymology
Ahd comes from the triliteral Semitic root ʿ-h-d, which carries the sense of binding oneself by a promise or entrusting something to someone. Classical Arabic uses it both for a formal pledge between people or nations and, by extension, for a span of time defined by whoever held power then, such as a king's reign. The word appears throughout the Quran and early treaties, which cemented its legal and political weight.
