Etymology

مُراسِل is the active participle of the Form III verb راسَل (rāsala), "to exchange letters or messages with someone." It comes from the triliteral root ر-س-ل (r-s-l), which carries the core idea of sending. The same root produces رسالة (letter, message) and رسول (messenger). Over time, the word narrowed from a general sense of correspondence to its modern use for a news correspondent.
