The word comes from المسيح (al-Masīḥ), "the Messiah" or "Christ," with the nisba suffix ـِيّ added to form a relative adjective meaning "of or belonging to the Messiah." Al-Masīḥ itself traces back through Aramaic and Hebrew to a root meaning "to anoint." The Semitic root is unrelated to Indo-European word families, so it has no PIE ancestor.
