Etymology
مَدْعُوّ is the passive participle of the verb دعا (da'ā), "to call, invite, or summon," built from the Semitic root د-ع-و. Arabic forms this kind of participle with the pattern مفعول, but because the root's last letter is a weak و, it merges with the pattern's own و to give the doubled و spelled with a shadda: مدعوّ. The result means, literally, "one who has been called," and in practice, "invited" or "a guest."
