Etymology
بندق likely entered Arabic from Byzantine Greek ποντικόν (pontikon), meaning 'nut of Pontus,' the Black Sea region long famous for hazelnut orchards. Traders and travelers around the medieval Mediterranean carried the word along with the nut itself. A secondary sense, a small round pellet, grew from the resemblance between a hazelnut and a lead shot, and this sense later gave Arabic its word for rifle, بندقية.
