Etymology

The word comes from the Semitic root kh-ṣ-ṣ, which carries the sense of setting something apart or reserving it for a specific use. From this root Arabic built khāṣṣ, meaning special or private, and khuṣūṣ, an abstract noun for particularity or specificity. Adding the nisba suffix -iyy to khuṣūṣ produced khuṣūṣiyy, the adjective form meaning private or personal. This is a native Semitic development, not a borrowing from another language family.
