Etymology
The word comes from the Semitic root q-d-m, which carries the core sense of front, precedence, and age. From this root Arabic built the Form V verb taqaddama, meaning to advance or move oneself forward. Mutaqaddim is the active participle of that verb, so it literally names someone or something in the state of having moved to the front.
