Etymology
Qarḍ comes from the Semitic root q-r-ḍ, whose base sense is to cut or sever. A loan was conceived as a portion cut off from one's wealth and handed to another, to be returned in equal measure. This root sense also gave Arabic the verb qaraḍa, to cut or gnaw, and separately the word for composing poetry, qarīḍ, from the idea of carving out verse. The word is native Semitic vocabulary, not a borrowing from another language family.
