Etymology
Irhāb is the masdar, or verbal noun, of the Form IV verb arhaba, which means to terrify or to strike with dread. Both come from the triliteral Semitic root r-h-b, which carries the core sense of fear. The same root gives rāhib, a monk, understood as one who lives in fear or awe of God. In the 20th century, irhāb became the standard term in Arabic media and law for organized political violence, matching the modern English sense of terrorism.
