Etymology

مُدافِع comes from the Arabic root د-ف-ع (d-f-ʿ), meaning to push away or repel. It is the active participle of the Form III verb دافَعَ (dāfaʿa), which adds a sense of sustained effort to the base action, to keep pushing something away on someone's behalf. This is why the word covers both a sports defender and a legal or moral advocate: both push back a threat.
