Etymology

إضاءة is the verbal noun (masdar) of the Form IV verb أضاءَ, meaning to light something up or make it shine. Form IV verbs add a causative sense to the base root, so the underlying root ض و ء, which gives ضوء (light), becomes أضاء (to cause to shine) and then إضاءة (the act of causing to shine, i.e. lighting). The pattern is regular for Form IV masdars of hollow roots, where the middle weak letter drops and a تاء مربوطة closes the word.
