Etymology

The word comes from the Arabic root ك و ن (k-w-n), meaning "to be" or "to exist," the same root behind كان ("was") and مكان ("place"). The مَفْعَلة pattern turns a root into a noun of place or abstract state, so مكانة literally suggests "the state of being situated." Over time that spatial sense of "place" shifted into the figurative sense of social standing or rank.
