Etymology

The word comes from the Semitic root ḏ-ʿ-f, which in its basic form (ضَعْف) means weakness. A separate vowel pattern on the same root, ضِعْف, means a double or matching amount, and this sense fed the Form III verb ضاعَفَ, meaning to double or multiply something. مُضاعَفَة is the verbal noun of that Form III verb, following the standard مُفاعَلة pattern. Arabic is a Semitic language, so it has no Indo-European root.
