Etymology
ضِعْف comes from the Arabic triliteral root ض-ع-ف, which carries the core idea of adding an equal amount to something. The same root, with a different short vowel, gives ضَعْف (weakness), but the two words are separate lexical items distinguished only by that vowel. Classical dictionaries define ضِعْف as the like of a thing joined to it, which is why it settled into the sense of doubling or a multiple.
