Etymology
مفعول comes from the Arabic triliteral root ف-ع-ل, meaning to do or make. It follows the mafʿūl pattern, the standard passive participle shape for Form I verbs, so it literally means the thing that has been done or acted upon. Arabic is a Semitic language, not Indo-European, so it has no Proto-Indo-European root or cognates in that family.
