بيع comes from the Arabic triliteral root ب-ي-ع, a root shared by nearly every classical and modern Arabic word about buying and selling. The passive past form بِيعَ marks something as sold, formed not by adding a prefix or suffix but by shifting the root's internal vowels, a common pattern for Arabic hollow verbs whose middle letter is و or ي. Arabic belongs to the Semitic language family rather than the Indo-European one, so it has no Proto-Indo-European ancestor, and no confirmed cognates outside Semitic exist for this root.
