Etymology
مَحْمِيّ is the passive participle of the verb حَمَى (ḥamā), "to protect, guard, defend," built from the triliteral Semitic root ح-م-ي. The root is a defective one, ending in the weak letter yāʾ, which is why the regular passive participle pattern mafʿūl (مفعول) contracts here into maḥmiyy rather than the expected maḥmūy. The same root gives Arabic حِمَايَة (protection) and حِمى (protected territory, sanctuary).
