Etymology

تَلا comes from the Semitic root ت-ل-و (t-l-w), whose core sense is to follow or to come after. In Arabic this widened from physical or temporal following to the act of reading a text aloud, verse by verse, in sequence, as in Quranic recitation. The verbal noun تلاوة still means specifically recitation, especially of scripture. Arabic is a Semitic language, not an Indo-European one, so no PIE root applies here.
