Ṣawb comes from the Semitic root ṣ-w-b, which carries the core sense of aiming and hitting a mark correctly. The same root gives Arabic aṣāba (to hit, to strike accurately) and ṣawāb (correctness). Ṣawb itself narrowed to mean the point or line an action is aimed at, hence direction.
