Etymology
The verb comes from the triliteral Arabic root ʿ-w-n (ع و ن), which carries the core sense of help or assistance. It is cast in Form VI (تَفَاعَلَ), a pattern Arabic uses to mark reciprocal or mutual action between two or more parties. So where the simple root gives help, the Form VI derivative gives each other help, which is why taʿāwana means to cooperate rather than simply to assist.
