Etymology
The verb comes from the triliteral Semitic root ط-ر-أ, which in Classical Arabic carries the sense of something new appearing or breaking in on a situation. Arabic dictionaries such as Lisan al-Arab already record it with the meaning of an event coming about suddenly or unexpectedly. Modern Standard Arabic keeps this core sense and uses the root heavily in administrative and news contexts, most visibly in the derived word for 'emergency'.
