Etymology

The word is the verbal noun of the verb فارَ (fāra), to boil, gush, or bubble up, from the root ف و ر. Its first sense is the boiling over of water. From the picture of water erupting all at once, the noun took on the sense of the immediate moment, much as English speaks of acting in the heat of the moment. Today it survives mainly in the phrase على الفور, at once.
