Etymology
شاءَ is a Form I verb from the Semitic triliteral root ش-ي-ء (sh-y-ʾ). The same root gives the noun شَيء (shayʾ), 'thing,' and مَشيئة (mashīʾa), 'will.' It is a hollow verb: the middle radical surfaces as a long ā in the past tense and as a glide in other forms.
