The verb comes from the Semitic triliteral root ʼ-k-d (also written w-k-d), which carries the sense of firmness and being fixed. Form II أَكَّدَ means to make firm, to confirm, or to emphasize. تَأَكَّدَ is the Form V (tafaʕʕala) pattern, a reflexive or middle voice of that verb, so it means to make oneself sure. The root is Semitic and has no Indo-European source.
