Etymology
قائِد is the active participle of the verb قادَ (qāda), 'to lead or drive,' built on the Semitic root ق-و-د (q-w-d). The فاعِل pattern turns the verb into 'the one who leads.' The weak medial و surfaces as a hamza, giving qāʾid rather than qāwid. Through Arab rule in Iberia the phrase al-qāʾid passed into Spanish as alcaide and into French as caïd.
