Etymology
The word comes from the triliteral Semitic root ن-ظ-م (n-ẓ-m), whose verb means to arrange, to put in order, and to string pearls on a thread. From that image of beads held in line came the abstract sense of order, arrangement, and then system. The political sense of regime is a modern extension of the same idea.
