Etymology

قَرْن goes back to Proto-Semitic *qarn-, meaning horn. The sense widened from the animal horn to a horn-shaped peak, and then to a span of time, a generation or a century. The root ق-ر-ن also carries the idea of joining, and horns come as a matched pair.
