قِصَّة comes from the Semitic root q-ṣ-ṣ, whose verb قَصَّ means both to cut and to follow a track, and from there to recount. A story is a sequence of events told in order, like following a trail step by step. The same root gives قَصَص, narration, which titles a chapter of the Qur'an.
