Etymology
Kashf comes from the Arabic triliteral root k-sh-f, which conveys removing a cover to expose what lies beneath. As a masdar, or verbal noun, built on the pattern fa'l, kashf names the act or result of uncovering, whether the thing hidden is physical, informational, or spiritual. The same root gives Sufi mysticism its technical term for an inward unveiling of truth, and gives modern Arabic everyday terms like a medical checkup or a bank statement. A related Semitic root shows up in Hebrew kashaph, though its meaning narrowed over time to sorcery, tied to the idea of a sorcerer uncovering hidden powers.
