Etymology
كَنِيسَة entered Arabic from Aramaic, where knīštā meant a place of assembly. The same Semitic root for gathering gave Hebrew its word for assembly, knesset. In Arabic the term settled on the Christian church, while the masculine كَنِيس came to mean a synagogue. The native root ك-ن-س also carries the sense of sweeping and gathering, which kept the loanword at home in the language.
