Etymology

This is the active participle of the Form VIII verb اِهْتَمَّ (ihtamma), to take an interest or to care. It is built on the triliteral root ه‑م‑م (h-m-m), which carries the sense of concern, worry, and intent. The Form VIII pattern adds a reflexive shade: to take a concern upon oneself. The same root yields هَمّ (worry) and مُهِمّ (important).
