Etymology

Kīs entered Arabic as a loanword from Middle Persian kīsag, meaning pouch or purse. Arabic lexicographers such as Ibn Manẓūr already flagged it as an arabized foreign word rather than a native Semitic formation. It is a homograph of the unrelated native root k-y-s, which gives words for cleverness, but the two histories do not connect.
