Etymology
عُمُوم is a masdar, a verbal noun, from the doubled-root verb عَمَّ (yaʿummu), meaning to be general, widespread, or to cover everyone. The root ع-م-م denotes collectivity and breadth, the same sense behind عامّ, "general" or "public". This is a native Semitic root, not tied to an Indo-European ancestor, so no PIE reconstruction applies.
