Etymology
The root ع-ز-ب carries the sense of being apart or living away from settled family life. In Classical Arabic the verb عَزَبَ described a person or thing that was distant or absent. From this base the adjective أَعْزَب came to mean a man who lives without a wife, a bachelor. Hebrew has a root with the same three consonants, עזב, though its meaning shifted toward leaving or forsaking rather than staying unmarried.
