مَتْجَر is a noun of place built on the root ت-ج-ر, which carries the sense of trading. The mīm prefix with the مَفْعَل pattern marks the place where an action happens, so the word means the place of trade. The related noun تاجِر (merchant) is widely held to be an old loan from Aramaic taggārā, which itself traces back to Akkadian tamkāru.
