Etymology
تَعَلَّق comes from the Semitic root ʿ-l-q, which carries the idea of hanging and clinging. It is the Form V (reflexive) of عَلَّقَ, meaning to hang up or to suspend. So the verb literally means to hang oneself onto something, and from there to cling, to become attached, or to be connected with. The same root gives عَلَق, the Arabic word for a leech, the creature that fastens itself and will not let go.
