طَبِيعَة comes from the Semitic root ṭ-b-ʿ, which means to stamp, imprint, or mold. A thing's nature was understood as the stamp pressed into it at its making. Medieval Arabic philosophers used the word to render the Greek 'physis' when they translated Aristotle. The same root gives the modern verb طَبَعَ, 'to print.'
