Etymology
زِفاف is the verbal noun of the Arabic verb زَفَّ, which meant to lead the bride to the groom in a festive procession. The sense moved from the act of escorting the bride to the wedding celebration itself. The triliteral root ز-ف-ف also carries an older notion of swift, fluttering movement.
