Etymology

The verb comes from the triconsonantal root w-j-h, which carries the idea of a face or a side. The noun wajh means face. In Form III, the pattern that inserts a long a after the first radical, the verb means to set one's face toward someone or something, and so to confront it head-on. The same root gives wijha, direction, and ittijah, also direction.
