The word is the active participle of the Form III verb بَاشَرَ, meaning to undertake or handle something directly. Both derive from the triconsonantal root ب-ش-ر, tied to بَشَرة, the skin. The underlying image is direct contact, skin to skin, so a مُباشِر is one who touches the work himself.
