Etymology

The verb comes from the Semitic root ṣ- gh-w/y, whose base sense is to incline or lean toward something. أَصْغَى is the Form IV (causative) verb, so it means to make oneself incline toward a sound, that is, to bend one's ear to it. The idea of physical leaning became the idea of attentive listening.
