صَغا comes from the triliteral Semitic root ص-غ-و, a defective root whose final radical shifts between و and ي depending on the verb pattern used. Its core sense is physical tilting or leaning, and this extends naturally to the ear or heart tilting toward a sound or idea, hence the meaning of listening or being drawn to something. The causative Form IV, أَصْغَى, built on the same root, became the standard verb for attentive listening in later and modern usage.
