Etymology
The word comes from the Semitic root ʿ-ṣ-b, which carries the sense of binding or tying. From this root, Arabic formed the noun ʿaṣab, meaning sinew or nerve, since a nerve or tendon binds parts of the body together. Adding the nisba suffix -iyy turned the noun into an adjective, ʿaṣabiyy, meaning relating to the nerves, which later extended to describe a person who is on edge or quick to anger.
